VA Medical Center Psychosocial Residential Rehabilitation Treatment Program (RRTP), Perry Point, MD
Project Gallery
The goal of this project is to renovate BLDG 364 to accommodate the newly approved Mental Health Residential Rehabilitation Treatment Program (RRTP). The existing space within unit 364B served as locked inpatient psychiatry STAR unit. The new RRTP will treat these Veterans in a much less restrictive and more recovery-oriented environment. Unit 364B will be renovated to accommodate this new program creating a more home-like residential environment departing from the current institutional feel of the existing space.
In serving as a transformational resource, this Renovation is intended to help advance a new treatment paradigm in inpatient psychiatry and residential and outpatient settings that emphasizes recovery, rather than symptom monitoring and stabilization, for patients with even the most severe mental illnesses. This new design approach is being implemented throughout the Veterans Health Administration and represents a significant departure from traditional approaches to mental health facility design.
40,000 S.F.
The Perry Point VA Medical Center is located on a beautiful campus of approximately 400 acres on the banks of the Susquehanna River and the Chesapeake Bay where patients can enjoy a variety of recreational activities, including fishing, swimming, bicycling, and jogging. Taking advantage of this iconic site and core to the program is an outdoor “Healing Garden”, used for group therapy, or space for contemplation, social interaction or personal time just enjoying the outdoors.
Mimar provided all professional architectural and engineering (A/E) services necessary to develop complete drawings, specifications, cost estimates, project phasing site visits and construction period administration associated with renovating BLDG 364. EBL performed Mechanical, Electrical, and Fire Protection services.

Mimar conducted preliminary project scope meetings and site survey investigations to develop the necessary elements for conceptual layout schemes with proposed alternatives consistent with the VA's project team goals as prioritized during preliminary project meetings, field surveys and studies. Mimar provided coordinated construction drawings and specifications in full compliance with all relevant guidance provided in the "Technical Information Library” (TIL). Scope of work included space planning, interior design, facility condition assessment, HVAC design, new electrical systems, plumbing, fire protection, and construction administration.
