Mimar Architects & Engineers is retained to provide programming and design services of 12,674 sf new biomedical research center, a Specialized Technological Center for Assistive Rehabilitation (STAR) research (a center for biomechanical and rehabilitation engineering) to be located in Building 32/42 and Building 43 at the University of the District of Columbia, Van Ness Campus.
The design intent is to add additional square feet to the “A” level of Building 43 to allow enough space to accommodate the new equipment and functions of one or more of the laboratories. Locating the laboratory in this space will allow a portion of the biomedical center to be visible to occupants passing by, thereby showcasing the new center. The building design and layout seeks to take full advantage of this visibility with transparent walls along with appropriate lighting and signage.
Following specialized spaces and labs were designed -
Biomechanics Laboratories, Gait and Balance Laboratory, Virtual Reality Rehabilitation Laboratories, CAREN Motek Laboratory, Assistive Technologies and Medical Robotics Laboratory and Star Research think work space
